2010 Wheelchair Tennis Grand Prix Champions Crowned

November 22, 2010 10:13 AM
The A Division final of the USTA/ Virginia Wheelchair Open started at 10 am on Halloween Sunday.  Finalists Mark Jenkinson of West Virginia and Pat Burns of Maryland had been in this situation many times before.  They exchanged points, games and sets, and Jenkinson emerged the champion three sets and two hours and fifteen minutes later.  The match was a fitting culmination of the USTA/Virginia Wheelchair Open and the inaugural year of the Truong Wheelchair Grand Prix circuit.

The Truong Rehabilitation Center of Fredericksburg, VA sponsored a four tournament Grand Prix Circuit in 2010 and brought new levels of excitement to four wheelchair tennis tournaments in North Carolina and Virginia.  The 2010 circuit started with the Midlothian Athletic Club Wheelchair Open in May and continued with the Wilmington Tournament  in Wilmington, NC and the Fredericksburg dNC/YMCA Wheelchair Open in Fredericksburg.  The circuit concluded on Halloween weekend at the USTA/Virginia Wheelchair Open held at the McCormack Nagelson Tennis Center on the campus of the College of William and Mary in historic Williamsburg, VA.

The players accumulated grand prix points throughout the series, and the champions in divisions A, B and C were crowned in Williamsburg.  Mark Jenkinson, Mel  Curry and Valeria Reyes-Chian are the 2010 division A, B and C champions.  Additionally, the 2010 Carma Lee Lewallen Sportsmanship Award was rewarded to newcomer Rama Venkata Varma Vetukuri.    Anne and Bao Truong , owners of the Truong Rehabilitation Center, were on hand to present the trophies for the tournament and for the circuit.  The champions received Truong Cups and will have their names engraved on a beautiful permanent trophy on display at the Truong Rehabilitation Center in Fredericksburg, VA.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to the Truong Rehabilitation Center for its sponsorship and to the USTA for financial support and to USTA VA Tennis for financial and staff support.
