Sportsmen's Tennis Club reaches back to go forth

Bahar Uttam of the Boston Lobsters and USTA New England Executive Director Jeff Waters
For nearly 50 years, Sportsmen’s Tennis Club has provided a safe, nurturing environment for children in the city of Boston, aiding them in reaching their full athletic and academic potential. On Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, Sportsmen’s gave the community at large an opportunity to contribute to that nurturing environment by continuing a long-standing tradition -- the I.C.I.C. (Industry and Community Investing in Children) tennis tournament and luncheon.

The I.C.I.C. tournament consists of doubles matches that pair STC Juniors with local professionals, community members and guests. It is a pairing that is symbolic of the community’s investment in children’s lives. Appropriately, the I.C.I.C. falls every year on the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as the club does its part to improve the quality of life for low-income youth and young adults throughout Boston.

Sportsmen’s recognized the accomplishments of George A. Russell, Executive Vice President and Director of Community Affairs for State Street Corporation. His philanthropic spirit and strong sense of community are an inspiration.

Honorary co-chairs included Mayor Thomas M. Menino, Angela Menino, legendary tennis journalist Bud Collins and STC alumnae Glynn Lloyd, whose company, City Fresh Foods, catered the luncheon pro bono. The event committee included media, sports and youth-based organizations, including USTA New England, GEICO, City Fresh Foods, Reebok International, The Boston Foundation, TOUCH 106.1 FM, 90.9 FM WBUR, the New England Patriots and more.
