David A. Haggerty, Chairman of the Board, CEO and President
David A. Haggerty began serving as Chairman of the Board, CEO and President of the USTA in January 2013. Previously, he served one term each as First Vice President, 2011-12, Vice President, 2009-10, and Director at Large, 2007-08. As Chairman of the Board, CEO and President, Haggerty is the chairman of the US Open. He is also chairman of the Compensation Committee and serves on the Major Construction Oversight Committee and the International Committee, as well as serving as a member of the board of directors of USTA Serves, the national charitable foundation of the USTA. In addition, he serves on the Grand Slam Board and is Vice President of the ITF Board, is Chairman of both the ITF Women’s Circuit Committee and the ITF Joint Media Commission, and serves on the Finance Committee.
Haggerty has held a number of past positions within the USTA. Prior to his appointment as First Vice President, Haggerty served as the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and as a member of the Compensation and Executive committees. In 2007-08, he served as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, Executive Committee and Budget Committee.
Prior to joining the USTA’s board of directors, Haggerty served for six years on the board of directors of the USTA Middle States Section and as chair of the USTA Section Marketing and Public Relations Committee, 2005-06. Haggerty served a two-year term as president of the Tennis Industry Association from January 2007 to January 2009, and served on the TIA’s Executive Committee for more than 20 years.
Haggerty is the former chairman of Head USA, a position he held upon his retirement in March 2010. He began his career in tennis in 1980, when he was hired by Prince as product manager for accessories. In his 14 years at Prince, Haggerty worked his way up to general manager before taking a position at Dunlop as the president of Racquet Sports. He was recruited to Head in 1998, where he served as president of Head/Penn Racquet Sports and Penn Worldwide before becoming chairman and chief executive officer of Head’s U.S. businesses. He currently serves as an external director on the board of Kepner-Tregoe, a global management consulting company that focuses on providing clear thinking to improve the business performance of clients worldwide using proven management methods.
Haggerty began playing tennis at age 6 and was a nationally ranked junior player at Pennsbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pa. He received a tennis scholarship to The George Washington University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration and was the No. 1 singles player on the tennis team, serving as captain for three of his four years at the school. Still a frequent player, Haggerty in 2004-05 was nationally ranked in singles and doubles in the 45-and-over age division.
Haggerty has been inducted into the Athletic Halls of Fame at Pennsbury High School, The George Washington University, USTA Middle States and Mercer County (N.J.) Tennis. He was named the 2008 Person of the Year by Racquet Sports Industry magazine.
Haggerty lives in Pennington, N.J., and has five children. He resides in the USTA Middle States Section.
