In 2011 USTA Hawaii adopted the 3rd Squadron, 4th US Cavalry deployed out of Schofield Barracks. The unit was deployed to Afghanistan. Several service members are home and the remainder return in April. USTA Hawaii sent care packages, and the USTA sent portable tennis equipment.
USTA Hawaii treated the families and service members, including four wounded warriors, to special sponsor seating, a catered lunch and each received a gift bag. They were introduced to the crowd between the doubles and singles final matches and were greeted with a standing ovation from the audience.
USTA Hawaii plans to continue the relationship with the service members from this squadron by inviting them to various tennis clinics and activities that are held throughout the year. They are a shining example of how tennis communities can reach out to the military. To learn more about the program visit usta.com/military.
