Houston Tennis Association Adopts Two Units

Houston Tennis Association held a packing party on November 3rd. They packed up 82 boxes, 41 for each unit they adopted in Afghanistan. They have been communicating by e-mail with the units they are adopting who have been very appreciative of the support.

Over the last several weeks they collected snacks, drink mixes, hygiene items, socks, playing cards, magazines, DVD's and LOTS of letters from school children. When they took their boxes to the post office, they met a veteran who served from 2003-2004. When they brought their first boxes in on dollies, he glanced down to see the mailing address. As soon as he saw they were going to an APO address, he offered his help. He helped them bring the rest of the boxes in from the cars. He said that the best part of their days overseas were when they got anything from home. His younger brother was helping unload one of the dollies and told organizer, Jodi Jablonski, that he wants to enlist when he gets older. It was an amazing experience for the volunteers from Houston Tennis Association.

As part of the USTA Adopt-A-Unit program, USTA Serves sent portable tennis equipment to the units as a means of recreation and stress relief. The units can set up the portable tennis equipment in their motor pools.

This is not the first time Houston Tennis Association has adopted a unit. They did this for a unit last year, and organizer Jodi Jablonski said then “we hoped we didn’t have to do it again next year, but we will if the need is there… the Houston Tennis Association will once again help take care of other troops overseas.”
