Billie Jean King (center), as the ambassador for Wold TeamTennis, helps realize the USTA Military Outreach cause of assisting U.S. troops both at home and abroad.
Approximately 120 junior tennis players from across the country attended the Billie Jean King World Team Tennis Junior National Tournament at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego on August 1, 2012. The players brought items for care package sent to an Army unit in Afghanistan as part of the USTA Adopt-A-Unit Program. At the packing party the junior players wrote letters to their adopted unit:
Dear Fellow American,
My name is Kyle and I am from Phoenix, Arizona. Even though I don’t know you by name I wish to sincerely thank you for your service not only to the United States but to the whole world. As I write this I am at World Team Tennis Nationals in San Diego hosted by Billie Jean King. We were able to talk to a Marine who lost his legs in Iraq and he was one of the strongest people I’ve ever met, as are all people I’ve met who have served. I don’t think I can sum up my feelings of pride and gratefulness to you in a few sentences but I have personally seen the effects the war can have people and I know you are working against that. Thank you. I hope this care package finds you in good health.
Sincerely a Proud U.S. Citizen,
