The Montgomery County Tennis Association facilitated the first USTA Tennis Therapy Clinic for wounded service members at Walter Reed National Medical Center, Bethesda. They had great volunteer coaches who kept the service members moving and engaged for two hours. There was tremendous enthusiasm expressed by all including coaches and participants. The event was so well received that everyone asked when they would have another opportunity to participate in tennis again. The two recreational therapists who accompanied the service members said that they would be happy to make tennis a regular part of their recreational activities on or off campus. The MCTA is planning to continue the program at an indoor facility only two miles from the Walter Reed campus, and setting up temporary courts on a grassy area on campus until a tennis facility can be built. The USTA is in the design phase of providing a tennis facility suitable for tennis therapy clinics for the campus at Walter Reed.
