Innovation: Tournament for USTA league runners-up
Rationale: USTA league players vie for a spot at sectional championships. The second place teams often feel that they’ve come so close, but get left out of the fun of playing sectionals. Bring them into the fun by hosting a non-officiated tournament for them!
- Keeps morale high
- Builds camaraderie among and between teams
- Encourages players to try again (for sectionals) next year
- Creates a fun, competitive atmosphere
- Can be scheduled when court usage is low
- Generates revenue for the host facility
Proven where: Corpus Christi, TX hosts a women’s event for levels 2.5 to 4.0. This event has grown to more than 550 players. Waco, TX hosts one for men 3.0 to 4.5. The Waco event has over 300 players.
Quote from the innovator: “The players love it. There’s no advancement to nationals, we allow some substitutions so that teams can attend. It’s a good reward, particularly to those teams that came in a close second and are still able to make a road trip.” Ron Woods, Tournament Director, Corpus Christi, TX
