May 2006 Tennis Volunteer of the Month
Steve Doyle of West Bath, Maine
People sometimes mistake Steve Doyle for a USTA employee, considering how much time he devotes to the game of tennis. As a league captain in USTA New England, Steve recruits players, promotes league involvement, schedules matches, and inspires members of the team. All this as a volunteer-no wonder he's the May 2006 Volunteer of the Month.
"Steve Doyle is an example of a frequent player and a constant volunteer," said Heather Anastos, USTA New England Director of Competitive Tennis. "A player like Steve grows tennis."
Captains are the largest group of volunteers in the USTA League program. But even amongst the captains, Steve's accomplishments stand out. He has participated in all divisions of USTA Leagues: Adult, Senior, Fall Mixed, Winter Mixed and USTA sanctioned tournaments. He is not old enough for Super Seniors but no doubt will add this division to his resume when he becomes of age.
Steve serves on USTA Maine's League Committee to help grow league tennis throughout Maine. Since 2000, he has himself played on 50 teams, captained more than half of them, and participated in three District Championships, two Sectional Championships, three Senior Sectional Championships, four Mixed Doubles Championships, and one National Senior Mixed Championship.
"Steve's contributions to the USTA League Tennis program over the years have been outstanding," said Jeff Waters, USTA New England Executive Director. "We appreciate all of his tireless efforts in helping us to grow the game."
