October 2007 USTA Tennis Volunteer of the Month
Tim Allen of Clewiston, Florida
Mention the name Tim Allen in southern California, and people think of the former sitcom star of “Home Improvement.” But mention the name Tim Allen in southern Florida, and people think of the current tennis volunteer star in Hendry County.
The Tim Allen of Florida, while fairly new to tennis, has had a great impact on growing tennis opportunities in his community, for both children and adults.
“I know our programs are working when kids keep coming back night after night asking for more tennis,” Tim said. “I like being part of something that is making a difference.”
A professor of business and real estate at Florida Atlantic University for fifteen years, Tim came to tennis originally looking for an instructor for his two daughters, both of whom have started competing in junior tournaments. He approached Susie Bessire, the local USTA Community Coordinator, for advice.
“She discussed with me how I could get more players involved in tennis in my community,” Tim said. “As I learned more about the USTA support programs, I became convinced that I needed to set up a CTA to develop tennis programs in Clewiston.”
Tim did just that, establishing the Clewiston Community Tennis Association in 2006, and it took off. The CTA hosted a Recreational Coach Workshop for sixteen new coaches and then created a new after-school tennis program for over 50 participating students, many of whom had never touched a tennis racquet in their lives. After seeing their kids have fun on the courts, a group of parents asked for an adult program using the same format; the CTA obliged.
“Of all the programs I have assisted with since we formed our CTA, I am most proud of the ones that bring kids to the courts who show up knowing nothing about tennis and leave that first night feeling like a tennis player,” Tim said.
Tim currently is on the Board of the CTA and is the volunteer Hendry County Representative with USTA Florida. He participated in the writing of the new advocacy curriculum coordinated by the USTA to impact and grow local tennis opportunities. And he serves on the USTA Florida Community Tennis Council and Advocacy Committee.
“Tim Allen is a great addition to our USTA Florida volunteer workforce,” said Donn Davis, USTA Florida’s President-elect. “He came to us looking for a tennis program for his daughters and with some support, he not only created it himself, but he also single-handedly created a CTA to further promote and develop tennis in his county.”
