SAN DIEGO -- Alessandro Damiano Ventre of Costa Mesa, Calif. hopes the third time is the charm at the USTA National Open Hard Court Championships being played this week at the Balboa Tennis Club.
The top-seeded Ventre, ranked No. 935 on the ATP World Tour, has played the tournament on two previous occasions, losing in the semifinals in 2009 and in the finals in 2010.
This year, the 26-year-old native of Brazil could be on his way to the title as he cruised past San Diego’s Jason Welborn, 6-0, 6-0 in a third-round match which took a little over an hour.
After receiving a first-round bye, Ventre has been impressive in advancing to the fourth round without the loss of a single game.
"This is the third time I played here. I really enjoy the environment. There are always a lot of people coming out to the courts to watch the matches," Ventre said. "There are a lot competitive players and good college players here."
Ventre, who possesses lightning-quick racquet speed on his forehand, knows what he has to do to keep winning this week at the Balboa Tennis Club. "I have to be focused on every single point. I have to put in a lot of first serves and basically fight for every point. We’ll see how it goes," he said.
In other third-round action, second-seeded Clarke Spinosa of Claremont, Calif. eliminated Gregory Garcia of Poway, Calif., 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the fourth round. Fourth-seeded Jonathan Pearlman of New York, N.Y., also advanced to Thursday’s fourth-round with a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Patrick Guion of Carlsbad, Calif.
Top-seeded Gabriella DeSimone of Rancho Santa Fe will play her opening match in the women’s singles draw against Regina Suarez of La Quinta at 9 a.m. (PDT) on Thursday.
DeSimone is a two-time San Diego Section California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) champion, who recently completed her freshman year at the University of Southern California.
Matches will begin at 9 a.m. (PDT) through the end of the tournament on Sunday, June 10. The winners of each division will be awarded a USTA gold ball, while the runner-up will be awarded a USTA silver ball. There will also be a 3rd/4th place playoff for the USTA bronze ball. All draws will have consolation events.
Former tournament champions include current American stars Jack Sock and CoCo Vandeweghe and former touring tennis professionals Gretchen Magers, Rosalyn Nideffer and Allison Bradshaw.
