2013 Year in Review: USTA League

Few programs in American sport that have catered to its audience like USTA League has for the past 33 years. In 2013, the organization’s institution for recreational tennis executed a makeover that would provide a player pool of 335,000 the best possible competitive experience.

USTA League jettisoned the monikers "Senior" (50 & over) and "Super Senior" (60 & over), building the model instead around two divisions: Adult and Mixed. The Adult Division consists of 18 & Over, 40 & Over and 55 & Over leagues, while the Mixed Division continues as 18 & Over, with a 40 & Over National Invitational set to be played in April 2014.

The result was one of the finest years ever, where stories and memories ranged far beyond winning and losing to tell the tale of what it’s like for an individual or a team to find itself in the game during the USTA League season.

"We think that we’ve created a more homogeneous tennis environment for the players across the country," said David Schobel, Director, USTA Competitive Tennis. "That sort of enthusiasm within this USTA League program – and the passion we all have for the sport – is going to provide us with a happier and larger player base in local league play."

The 2013 National Championship season from Sept. 27 through Nov. 24 was a two-month showcase for the restructuring effort – and the unique mix of competition and camaraderie that defines USTA League – crowning 26 brand new National Championship squads at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz., and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

The winning teams, representing the 17 sections that make up the USTA National map, were as follows:

Adult 18 & Over Men Adult 18 & Over Women
5.0 : Mid-Atlantic 5.0 : Texas
4.5: Southern 4.5: Mid-Atlantic

USTA League also became more tech-friendly in 2013 thanks to the Tournament Data Manager (TDM) system. Tournament directors and staff utilize the TDM system to manage their events from multiple computer entry points. With TDM, real-time tournament results, draws and scores are made available for players and their families to view from both their desktop computers and tablets. For more information about TDM, click here.
