TUCSON, Ariz. — The first day of action at the 2012 USTA League 4.0 Adult National Championships ended under the lights, as more than 50 of Friday’s matches ended in three-set tiebreaks.

Nine teams have emerged as favorites in their respective flights, going undefeated in their first two events.

On the women’s side, the Texas section finished 2-0 on the day with wins over Northern and Midwest. Also in Flight 1, the women from the Florida section remain unbeaten with victories over the Midwest and Pacific Northwest sections. The Eastern and Southern California women dominated Flight 2 with wins over the other teams in their flight, Intermountain and Southern.

On the men’s side, the Florida section is the only unbeaten in Flight 7 with wins over Southern California and Southwest. In Flight 6, there are two undefeated teams, as the Eastern and Mid-Atlantic sections beat the other two sections in their flight, Middle States and Southern. Representing Flight 5, the Texas men ended the day 2-0, defeating Intermountain and Northern. The men from the Hawaii section emerged as the only undefeated team in their heat with wins over Pacific Northwest and New England.

In other news around the tennis courts, the Pacific Northwest women claimed the first sweep of the weekend with a 5-0 win over the women from the Northern section. The sweep came with two come-from-behind wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Both partners from Portland, Ore., faltered in the first set against the women from Minneapolis.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Pacific Northwest’s Lisa Blanchard and Marie Picard lost the first set 1-6 to Northern’s Katie Kuzma and Megan Newbauer, but they came back in the final two sets to win 1-6, 7-6, 1-0 (5). Much like their counterparts, Jerilyn Hanson and Lydia Smith of Pacific Northwest went down in their first set, 1-6, against Northern’s Jill Lucas and Carrie Valois. They, too, came back with the final score 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6).

In earlier competition, the men representing Hawaii and Northern California came out with statement victories against their opponents.

The men from Honolulu defeated the Pacific Northwest section 4-1. The event between the two sections included a two-hour No. 2 singles match between Alden Lum of Hawaii and Ciprian Tais from Mill Creek, Wash. Lum beat Tais in three hard-fought sets 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (7).

In another 4-1 win, the Northern California men showed dominance against the New England men, taking only one doubles match to a three-set tiebreak. The No. 3 doubles team of Northern California’s Ben Sloan and Bryce McConnell defeated Ben Chan and Foster Perlmutter of New England 7-5, 5-7, 1-0 (6).

Also, the Hawaii women beat Middle States 3-2 and the women from Caribbean also had a 3-2 victory over Missouri Valley.

The Mid-Atlantic women also gained a 3-2 win in dramatic fashion over the Northern California women, with the final match lasting over two hours. Mid-Atlantic’s Deborah Brewster and Northern California’s Heather Bryant battled it out with Brewster coming away with the victory 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (3).

The Eastern women from Rye, N.Y., beat the women from the Intermountain section 4-1. The team’s score was anchored by two intense doubles matches. In the No. 1 doubles match, Samantha Goffinet and Lisa Brawn defeated Intermountain’s Carmen Little and Mary Clark 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9). Then, the Eastern No. 2 doubles team of Jacqueline Fusco and Stephanie Mishkin battled with Ofelia Gray and Linda Butler, coming out victorious with the score, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (5).

The men representing the Midwest section also had a commanding win over the Southwest men 4-1. In the No. 1 singles match, Midwest’s Carson Zerkle came out hot against Southwest’s Jesus T. Hernandez, finishing with the score 6-2, 6-1.
