Surprise, Ariz. – With players coming from the different USTA Sections to play in the National Championships, you never know who you’ll meet.
Playing at the USTA Nationals gives players the opportunity to meet many new people and at the same time, the chance to run into someone you haven’t seen in years.
That’s exactly what happened to Janet Fabio who is competing as a member of the Southwest Sectional 6.0 team at the 2008 USTA League 6.0 & 8.0 Super Senior National Championships at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.
Fabio and her husband Jim, had split their time between Minnesota and Arizona, but approximately six years ago, they retired and moved to Tucson, Ariz. fulltime. They lost touch with tennis partners Cheryl and Richard King. In fact, Jim and Richard not only played tennis together, but they had been co-workers as insurance salesmen for many years.
This week, on their way over to the event site in Surprise, Jim and Cheryl wondered aloud if they would run into anyone they knew and they even mentioned Cheryl King.
“Sure enough,” said Janet. When they got to the club, Jim looked at the roster of the Northern women’s 8.0 team and he found Cheryl King’s name.
When the happy reunion took place, there were hugs all around. “It was kind of a surprise. She looks the same,” said Janet. “She hasn’t changed a bit. We caught up and asked about the kids. It was wonderful, it was really cool.”
