Servin’ Soprano

Ralph Lieber
By Blake Grimsley,

Surprise, Ariz. - Ralph Lieber of the Northern men’s 7.0 team has a talent that goes far beyond his tennis court abilities. In fact many aren’t even aware of it when they first meet the Bonita Springs, Fla. resident. But don’t let that fool you—as it turns out, Lieber is an accomplished former Broadway star.

Lieber got his start by studying voice and dance in New York during the 1950’s. It proved to be an interesting time to be in the Big Apple with the popularity of television growing.

“I sang in Fanny in the Majestic Theatre many, many years ago, said Lieber.

In addition to Fanny, Lieber sang in the Catskills as a club act and made a record with the “Wind Victory Singers.”

Lieber concluded his career by auditioning for the lead in Westside Story with one other budding drama star.

“I left New York to return to school and never really checked about the gig for Westside Story,” said Lieber. “Turns out the other guy who I tried out with, received the starring role in Westside Story,” laughed Lieber.

When asked on the possibility of trying out again for the new revival of the Westside Story, Lieber chuckled and said it was “hardly” in his plans.

Well at least Lieber has never lost his passion for the game of tennis and his love of broadway!
