Southwest Wins 7.0 Opener Over Hawaii

TUCSON, Ariz. -- When the Southwest Section 7.0 team arrived in Tucson for the USTA League 2.5, 7.0, 9.0 Mixed Doubles National Championships this weekend at the El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, they felt right at home in more ways than one.

Led by team captain Jagadish Dandu, the El Paso-based Southwest Section team is not only used to playing in a desert environment, but they also know how to play in cool, cloudy and windy conditions.

With unsettled weather moving through the desert today, those were the exact conditions the Southwest Section played under during their first Flight 3 match against Hawaii earlier today on Courts 14, 15 and 16.

Despite losing the No. 1 doubles match in a hard-fought third-set match tiebreak, the Southwest Section team posted solid straight-set victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions to defeat the Hawaii Section team from Maui, 2-1.

Harsh Tyal and Blanca Soria of the Southwest Section defeated Hawaii’s Mauri Galvez and Vanessa Cannon, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles and Jose Lopez and Vianka Sanchez gave the Southwest Section and insurmountable 2-0 lead as they got past Matthew Conmy and Mary Marshall Seaver of Hawaii, 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 doubles match.

The Hawaii Section got on the scoreboard by winning No. 1 doubles as Max Tornai and Susan Gianlorenzo scored a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 1-0 (5) victory over Southwest’s Edgar Phinney and Irene Hudson.

Dandu said his team was already adjusted to the blustery conditions they had to play in against Hawaii. "Tucson is like El Paso – similar weather conditions," he said. "We know the climate. We’ve been playing in this. If it’s windy or raining, we’re okay as long as it’s not snowing."

The Southwest Mixed Doubles team (1-0), which plays at the El Paso Tennis Club, has made winning the National Championship their goal this weekend. Team members practiced three to four times a week prior to making the four-hour trip to Tucson.

"This time we put up a strong team. We put our time in and it looks like it paid off in the first match," Dandu said. "We’ll see what happens in the next match."

In a sign of good sportsmanship between the two 7.0 teams, competitors from the Southwest and Hawaii Sections got together for a group photo following the match.
