The USTA Mid-Atlantic Adult 18 & Over 4.0 men’s team and USTA Pacific Northwest Adult 18 & Over 4.0 women’s team were crowned the national champions at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.

The men, under the guidance of team captain Carlos Gandolfo, rolled past USTA Intermountain in the semifinals, 5-0, and defeated USTA Southern California in the final by winning four out of five matches. Katie Patchin’s women out of Seattle, meantime, handled USTA Caribbean, 3-2, and USTA NorCal, 4-1, to win the championship.

“It’s been a long road,” said Gandolfo. “We’ve been working hard for 14 months, three times a week. We came prepared and we did what we needed to do, win.”

“Everybody played their best now which couldn’t have been a better time,” said Scott Daniel, head coach of Pacific Northwest women. “I couldn’t ask for more out of them.”

All 17 USTA sections were accounted for in the 34 teams that competed this weekend.

“It was perfect, it went very smoothly,” said USTA League National Manager Darcy Cobb. “We couldn’t have had better weather and we had a wonderful staff as well as wonderful players.”

Nearly 400 miles away in Indian Wells, Calif., the other USTA League National Championships for the Adult 40 & Over 3.5 divisions were played, with the USTA Texas men and USTA Florida women winning national titles. The season continues in Tucson, Ariz. on Fri., Oct. 18 with Adult 18 & Over 4.5 League National Championships.
