San Jose 2012
The San Jose Open (formerly known as the Golden State Challenge) has been giving individuals the opportunity to compete in Wheelchair Tennis in Northern California for over 10 years. This past year we added a beginner’s clinic in conjunction with our tournament in the hopes of introducing new players to the sport of wheelchair tennis. Not only would this allow beginners to try the sport but it would also give them the opportunity to watch some competitive tournament play immediately following the clinic. This combination proved to be a huge success! 19 players attended the clinic, including 9 brand new players. Of the new players, 6 were juniors, 2 were wheelchair basketball players, and one was a new adult player from Fresno, CA.

Our Clinic had 3 wheelchair tennis coaches volunteer their time to introduce the sport.  We are very excited about the potential new growth in this area and hope to continue offering ongoing clinics throughout the year.

Our tournament portion went very well also. We had 24 players compete in this year’s event.  The women’s draws were particularly strong, with 4 Open players and 5 Women’s A players. Everyone enjoyed all of the amenities and commented that the tournament was very organized.  We are very excited about renewing the passion for wheelchair tennis in our area and offering ongoing programming.  We are very grateful to the USTA grant in which we received for the continued support to host our clinics in conjunction with our tournament which allows us to make this opportunity possible on a yearly basis. We look forward to hosting again in July 2012.
