LA JOLLA, Calif.
– The Stanford University duo of Bradley Klahn of Poway, Calif., and Ryan Thacher of Studio City, Calif., will return to the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club to defend their title at the 123rd Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Tennis Championships.

The prestigious doubles-only event, which features a unique tournament format, will take place from Thursday, March 1, through Sunday, March 4.

Klahn and Thacher won the title last year when they defeated Remi Boutillier and Rikus de Villiers of Fresno State University, 6-1, 6-2, in the final. In 2010, Klahn and Thacher finished as the runner-up, as they fell in the final to Robert Farah and Steve Johnson of the University of Southern California, 6-3, 6-2.

In this year’s tournament, Klahn and Thacher received a first-round bye and will face the winner of the first-round match between Ryan Peyton and Michael Rosengren of Villanova University and Robert Ankner and Christian McKean of Boston College in their opening match.

The Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Tennis Championships offers players and spectators one of the most interesting and unique competitor fields in the country, according to Bill Kellogg, tournament director and president of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

"This event is not only a showcase for some of the best collegiate players in the nation but also for a strong field of independent players, such as top teaching pros, promising juniors, college coaches and even former tour players," Kellogg said.

Among the NCAA Men’s college teams that have entered the 123rd Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Tennis Championships are Pepperdine University, Stanford University, UCLA, USC, UC-Berkeley, Rice University, Boston College, Villanova University, College of William and Mary, Loyola Marymount University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Fresno State University, plus local teams from San Diego State University, University of San Diego and University of California-San Diego.

"With the combination of top collegiate players and experienced independent players, the level of competition is going to be very high, from the first round all through the tournament finals," Kellogg said.

Spectator admission to the 123rd Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Tennis Championships is free and open to the public. On-site parking is available for a nominal fee.

Named "Club of the Year" for 2011 by the San Diego District Tennis Association and one of the "Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the World" by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club's reputation as a top tennis destination started when it attracted its first major tournament – the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in 1942.

The Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship is one of the five oldest tennis events in the world and the second oldest tennis event in the United States. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, Calif., the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East vs. those from the West. This coast-to-coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past winners of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship include Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston, John McEnroe, and many other world-class champions.
