Pennsylvania Governor Rendell to serve as Co-Chairman of 2004 World Senior Tennis Championships

May 25, 2008 12:08 PM

Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell will serve as the Co-Chairman of the 2004 World Senior Tennis Championships, taking place in Philadelphia next year. As former Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, Governor Rendell is a fitting choice to serve in the position.

The Championships, to be held from September 12- 26, 2004, constitute the largest international tennis event in the world, by number of participants. More than 1,000 competitors are expected to enter, including many former Davis Cup, Federation Cup, and Wightman Cup players.

Competition will be held for men and women in eight age groups from 55 to 90, divided into five-year increments. Players will come from over 30 different countries to compete in both team and individual world championships. The event is being held at the Philadelphia and Germantown Cricket Clubs, which will be celebrating their sesquicentennials next year, and at the Merion Cricket Club.

As with the Olympics, cities around the world compete to host this event. This will be only the third time that this annual tournament has ever been held in the United States.
