December 2005 Tennis Volunteer of the Month
Vicky Chee of Honolulu, Hawaii
If you play tennis in Honolulu, you know who Vicky Chee is. The Volunteer of the Month is involved in all aspects of tennis. In fact, her reach is so far that she’s like the center ripple in a pond of volunteers, with her service encouraging many others to volunteer for the sport.
Five years ago Vicky started as a USA Tennis 1-2-3 instructor at downtown Honolulu’s Ala Moana Regional Park, one of the largest and most popular public park tennis facilities. In a matter of months, Vicky increased participation in ‘Learn To Play’ so much that Ala Moana became one of the top three sites in the whole section.
In 2000, Vicky developed the Ala Moana Park Community Tennis Association, an NJTL program, with a strong base of devoted volunteers. Vicky and her CTA have been tremendous in helping USTA Hawaii Pacific with an incredible number of events and programs, including:
- Annual Tennis Weekend Event
- Pro Circuit Men’s Honolulu Futures Tournament
- Great Aloha Health & Fitness Expo
- USA Tennis Month of May activities
- Ekolu League Championships
- AARP Welcome Back To Tennis Event
- American Lung Association’s Sports Camp for kids with asthma
- Annual Coaches Workshop
- Cardio Tennis
For all their service, the Ala Moana Park Community Tennis Association won the 2003 USTA Hawaii Pacific Organization of the Year, and Vicky won the 2002 USTA Hawaii Pacific Special Service Award.
Vicky still finds time to play in numerous tennis leagues, including the Women’s Honolulu Tennis League, the USA Tennis Adult and Senior League and Ekolu League. She was recently recognized for her dedicated involvement as a league player for over 25 years and captained many of these teams. She is on the board of Honolulu Tennis League, chairs the section’s Tennis Weekend and has coordinated the Mixed Masters League.
As a volunteer, Vicky is a walking “Tennis Welcome Center” who never misses an opportunity to share the game with a youngster, senior, family or adult. She is a great recruiter, continuously bringing in new players and new volunteers. It’s common to hear her supporters remark, “I’ll do anything for Vicky.”
“Our section’s success revolves around valuable volunteers such as Vicky Chee,” said Madeleine Dreith, Tennis Service Representative for USTA Hawaii/Pacific. “We are extremely fortunate to have Vicky in our community.”
