August Tennis Volunteer of the Month
Gordon Lee of Burke, Virginia

Gordon Lee has been a tennis volunteer for over 20 years.

Gordon Lee has coached the Old Keene Mill Sand Sharks for over twenty years, starting with a handful of students and building the program into over 150 youth ages 7-18 playing on teams that compete in the Northern Virginia Tennis League. He devotes his time, energy and attention to helping his students develop a love for the game.

He has inspired, taught and mentored a multitude of children through the tennis program,” said Ruth Klimpl, whose son is one of Gordon’s players. “It's no wonder that Mr. Lee has more of his students go on to play high school and college tennis than anyone else. He's a master at teaching and motivating kids.”

The Sand Sharks have compiled an impressive record under Gordon. The boys’ team has won six championships in the last seven years; the girls’ team has won two titles in that time. Players pay a nominal fee to help pay for court instructors, but Gordon remains a volunteer, dedicating his time to mentoring his players to be not just good tennis players, but good citizens.
