With the summer tournament season just a few weeks away, junior players throughout the Chicago District of USTA Midwest are preparing to compete. One of the faces they will see often is enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer Mary Seelig of Highland Park, Illinois.

"Mary is a tremendous volunteer who puts the kids first, always has a smile on her face, and loves interacting with youth and adults both on and off the tennis court," said Mark Saunders, executive director of USTA Midwest. "Mary exhibits a passion for the sport of tennis, and this passion shines through to everyone."

Mary currently serves on the USTA/Midwest Section Junior Competition Committee. She was the Girls' 18 Section Endorser from 1997-2001, and has run USTA/Midwest Section Designated and Section tournaments since 1997. Mary is well-known among junior players for handing out gummy bears at matches. Win or lose, kids always receive candy from Mary as well as some encouraging words.

Mary has been involved in tennis with the Chicago District Tennis Association (CDTA) for more than 20 years, serving as a Chicago District Officer, Director-At-Large, and currently as a Board member.

She was the CDTA Volunteer of the Year in 1994, and Tournament Director of the Year in 1983, 1991, and 1995. After her third win, the award was renamed the Mary Seelig Tournament Director of the Year Award in honor of “her many years of supporting, directing and teaching the finer points of running a tournament.”
