2007 USTA National Campus Championship Day Two Comes To A Close

Four Teams Advance to Semifinals in Championship Bracket

Defending Champion Texas A&M; Virginia, finalist in two of last the last three years; 2003 Champion Florida and Penn State have advanced to the Semifinal Round of the Championship Bracket at the 2007 USTA National Campus Championship presented by Tennis Warehouse, being held at the Cary Tennis Park, April 26 – 28. The schools advanced to the Championship Bracket by winning their respective four-team pools.

The finals will be held on Saturday, April 28.

The USTA National Campus Championship is the culmination of the Tennis On Campus season and features 64 club and intramural teams from colleges and universities throughout the country.

The Tennis On Campus program features co-ed teams, playing in the World TeamTennis format. Over 400 colleges and 25,000 students currently participate in the program.

Yesterday, the teams advanced to the round of 16 by winning their respective pools. The teams advanced to the Semifinals by winning their round of 16 and Quarterfinal matches today:

Penn State defeated Stanford in the round of 16 and California in the Quarterfinals.

Virginia defeated Georgia in the round of 16 and Colorado in the Quarterfinals.

Texas A&M defeated Miami in the round of 16 and UCLA in the Quarterfinals.

Florida defeated Texas in the round of 16 and Cornell in the Quarterfinals.

The tournament is administered in partnership by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) and World TeamTennis (WTT). This partnership has not only resulted in record participation at this championship, but in growing interest and participation in club and intramural tennis on college campuses throughout the country. Many of the 64 participating programs were established in the last eight years and represent well over 4,000 additional players at their respective campuses.

As part of the Tennis On Campus season, all 17 USTA Sections hold Championships, with the winner of each receiving an automatic bid to the 2007 USTA Campus National Championship.

The inaugural USTA National Campus Championship, held in 2000, featured a total of 10 teams. Participation records have been set at each of the seven ensuing championships. Past championships have been held in Austin, Texas; Daytona Beach, Fla.; and San Diego, Calif.
