U.S. to Face Belgium in Fed Cup World Group I Quarterfinals, April 21-22
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The USTA announced that Zina Garrison will continue as captain of the U.S. Fed Cup team through 2007. The U.S. will host Belgium April 21-22 for the 2007 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group I quarterfinal at a site to be determined by the USTA.
“Zina took an inexperienced team to the Fed Cup semifinals this year and we believe she is the right person who can take this group of rising American stars to the next level,” said Jane Brown Grimes, President-Elect, USTA. ”Her strong relationship with our top players and her proven ability to mentor our up-and-comers means Zina can lead us to the Fed Cup title in 2007.”
“I am honored to continue as captain of the U.S. Fed Cup team,” said Garrison. “I expect our top players to be back in form next year and we now have a strong group of young women who are eager to continue what they started this year. Together we share one singular purpose -- winning the Fed Cup in 2007.”
Garrison is the 18th U.S. Fed Cup captain since the competition began in 1963 and first African-American captain in the competition’s history. She debuted as the U.S. Fed Cup captain in 2003, succeeding Billie Jean King, and has posted a 3-3 record as captain, reaching the semifinals the last two years. As a player, Garrison competed for the United States in Fed Cup for 8 years (1984-1987, 1989-1991, 1994) posting a 22-5 record (7-4 singles, 15-1 doubles) in 23 ties.
