Team Spirit a must with Heatstrokes
The Ahwatukee Heatstrokes, representing the USTA Southwest Section are from Phoenix, Arizona. The dry heat evidently hasn’t dampened their team spirit as the team decorated all the team cars before arriving at the tennis center for their Sectional Championship (which they proceeded to win). The team especially enjoys the post match meals in which team members get to know each other and are entertained by their younger siblings. "I really liked getting to know the families of the players”, stated one team member. Now their team spirit will be put to the test as they compete in the Regional Championships in El Paso, Texas this weekend. One thing is for certain, they won’t be bothered by theTexas heat!

Fun and Tennis mix with White Stars
The Waialae Iki 5 White Stars representing the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section bring a mixture of tennis talent and fun spirit to the USA Team Tennis Regional Championships being held this weekend at the El Paso Youth Tennis Center. Some of their spirit is captured in the stories told below by one of the parents… |

Story #1 Sectionals: It was on May 21, 2005, and the Waialae Iki 5 White Stars 3.0(14) tennis team had qualified for sectionals at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP). They started off with hair-coloring, but they didn’t have any white hair gel, so they used green (to match our shirts). Nicky and Sara had a dance that night, so they didn’t want to put gel in their hair. At least, Sara didn’t. But she promised to put however much in that they wanted on the next day. So they packed Nicky’s hair full of gel, in hopes that it wouldn’t wash out for the big night. After they warmed up, the team found out that if they made it to regionals in El Paso, Lizzy wouldn’t be able to compete; she was fifteen. So, the team worked like never before. They had lots of fun, both on and off the court. Rebecca won overall sportsmanship for the season, Marco lead the team as captain to a victorious season, Nicky helped Pedro (Marco’s brother) learn how to use a camera phone, Casey made lasting friends, Eric perfected his serve, Sara played with Pedro, and Lizzy had a great ending season for her 14’s division. Eventually coming in first place both in the season and at sectionals, this team has showed a great performance of tennis.
Story #2 The Game: It was the second day of sectionals, and the team was playing the deciding game for the set, match, and whole tournament. It was mixed doubles with Sara and Nicky playing against a tall boy and short girl on the team. The tie-breaker score was like a ladder; 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2… Sara hit a lob, trying to get it over the boy, but he jumped like a tiger and went “RRRRAAWWRRR!” like a lion and smashed it into the middle of our court. But the White Stars kept their cool, and focused on playing out rallies, hoping for the opponent to make the mistake. Despite the large crowd and cheering for the other team, the White Stars blocked them out and won the tie-breaker, the game, the set, the match, the tournament.
