Resource Center - Innovation: Hispanic Outreach / Tennis Titans Program

Innovation:    Hispanic Outreach / Tennis Titans Program

Rationale:      North Carolina has the fastest growing Latino/Hispanic population in the US.  There are 613,000 Latinos in NC, or 7.1% of the state’s population.  USTA-NC discussed ways of reaching this population.  Through financial assistance from USTA’s Hispanic Outreach Committee and the Executive Committee of the Southern Section, USTA-NC hired a part-time Hispanic Outreach Coordinator to work with and develop relationships and programs for this underserved group.  The following approaches were taken.
1) A directory of Spanish speaking pros was developed.
2) USTA-NC Staff and Volunteers and coordinated  booth activities at four major Hispanic Carnivals in Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Charlotte, and Asheville, introducing the sport to the Hispanic population.
3)   Registration for the Tennis Titan program was also held.  This beginner program will hopefully lead into participation in Junior Team Tennis.  NC launched 9 local Tennis Titan programs in the state.  (In addition, parents of the kids have joined adult programs.)

  1. Coordinated with CTAs to hold 6 local carnivals.
  2. Relationships were developed with the statewide Latino Coalition, made up of business leaders, media, manufacturing, banking, and educational institutions.  During the Davis Cup in Winston-Salem, staff and volunteers met with Latino businessmen and women to introduce our efforts.  These Latinos were guests of USTA-NC on the 3rd day of Davis Cup.

Proven where:  North Carolina Tennis Association, specifically the cities of Greensboro, Concord, Durham, Winston-Salem, and Asheville.   Financial support from the USTA and STA was for the first 18 months.  After the success, USTA-NC Management Committee budgeted for the efforts to continue in 2008.

Quote from the innovator:  “This program has brought EXCITEMENT to the Latino community in North Carolina!  This outreach has increased the base of Latino players in our state and will help us to grow our sport for years to come.”
