2012 Year in Review: USTA Tennis On Campus

December 30, 2012 09:00 AM
Players from the University of California-Berkeley team celebrate at the Tennis On Campus National Championship.
USTA Tennis On Campus celebrated another great year in 2012. Here are some of the highlights:

2012 Fall Invitational (October 19-21)

The Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, S.C., was once again the setting for the Tennis On Campus kick-off event of the season. Two hundred sixty students from 26 colleges and universities made up the 32-team draw of the tournament, which is now in its third year.

"The annual Fall Invitational is a great way for the USTA to help intramural tennis club programs kick off what has always turned out to be a great Tennis On Campus season," said Glenn Arrington, National Manager, USTA Tennis On Campus. "We are looking forward to these programs interacting with each other in a fun and competitive atmosphere throughout the tournament weekend. As the Tennis On Campus program grows and expands, so has this event, building tremendous momentum to an exciting season each year."

Excitement was high throughout the tournament, as two automatic bids to the National Championship were up for grabs. After suffering a heartbreaking defeat to the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia last year, the Blue Devils of Duke University hung on to win the final 26-23. Both schools have now secured their spot to the 2013 National Championship taking place next April in Surprise, Ariz.

2012 National Championship (April 12-14)

The Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C., was the home of the National Championship. Co-ed club teams from across the country competed for the title. The University of California-Berkeley defeated the University of Virginia 25-23. This was the second time UC Berkeley has captured the crown; they also won in 2010.

The 64-team draw featured six schools that advanced to Nationals for the first time: Columbia University, Davidson College, Purdue University, Tulane University, University of Cincinnati and Washington State. In contrast to the first-timers, the Western Washington University Vikings participated in their 13th consecutive National Championship. The Vikings are the only team to qualify and compete at each Tennis On Campus National Championship since it debuted in 2000.

The USTA Military Outreach program was on site in an effort to educate students about the initiative and encourage them to participate in the Adopt-A-Unit program. Players lined up to offer their support by writing letters to the troops, and after just a few hours on site, there were dozens upon dozens of letters, with several schools interested in adopting a unit.

The Championship was also the perfect time to honor those who have made significant contributions to the Tennis On Campus program on their respective campuses while also making a difference in the local community. Matt Ship from the University of Wisconsin-Madison was honored as the USTA Tennis On Campus Leader of the Year, and the University of Maryland-College Park was honored as the USTA Tennis On Campus Club of the Year. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2012-2013 awards. Submit one today!

2012 Spring Invitational (April 20-22)

The Tennis On Campus season came to a close with the Spring Invitational, which was once hosted at the Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. Thirty-two teams from 27 colleges and universities participated in the event, which celebrated its four-year anniversary. The University of Arizona defeated the University of San Diego (the three-time champion) in the semifinal and went on to beat the University of Texas at Austin 23-21 in the final. Arizona and Texas have now secured their bid to the 2013 National Championship.
