Best Tennis Town’s Finalists Announced
As reported in the Spring 2009 newsletter, The USTA's Best Tennis Town contest is looking for the community that best exemplifies the passion, excitement, community spirit and impact tennis brings to members of the community.
Thank you for answering the call to action and encouraging community leaders to nominate their town/city. 56 cities from all over the country nominated themselves by the July 1st deadline.
After carefully reviewing each submission that included an official nomination form, video, and recommendation letters, a qualified panel of judges selected the following cities as The Top Ten Finalists:
Grand Junction, Colorado
Baton Rouge, Louisiana T
Tempe, Arizona
Cary, North Carolina
Midland, Michigan
Independence, Kansas
Springfield, Missouri
Hickory, North Carolina
Ojai, California
Las Vegas, Nevada
The USTA profiled these communities and online voting occurred from July 16th – 26th. Visit www.besttennistown.com to view their profiles.
On July 28th, the three cities with the highest amount of votes were announced: Independence, Midland, and Ojai. Representatives from these communities will travel to New York City where the winner will be announced during a ceremony at this year’s US Open on Sunday, September 6th.
The winner will take home the 2009 “Best Tennis Town” title, an accompanying trophy and $100,000 to be used for community-wide tennis programming or facility enhancements. 2nd and 3rd prize winners will be awarded $50,000 and $25,000 respectively. The remaining 7 of the top ten finalists will receive an Honorable Mention distinction as well as $2000 worth of tennis equipment to be used for increasing community wide tennis programming.
The search for America’s “Best Tennis Town” is the USTA’s first-ever nationwide search to identify the local area—from small, rural towns to large, urban metro areas and everywhere in between—that best exhibits the qualities of a great tennis community. This year’s contest is a huge success and we’re already looking forward to next year’s competition.
Thanks again for your support.
