Clovis Tennis Club Supports More Than Just Tennis
Clovis Tennis Club (CTC) is a vital part of the Fresno/ Clovis and surrounding communities. They can be credited for introducing thousands of people to tennis. Many new players began their tennis experience with close friends or family members, at the Clovis Tennis Club’s evening leagues. Clovis Tennis Club brings hundreds of players into USTA League tennis each year as well as offering USTA junior and adult tournaments.
Recognizing a community need beyond tennis, Clovis Tennis Club began supporting the local Communities Reaching Out To People (CROP) Hunger Walk in September 2005 by holding a tennis tournament fund raiser to support the local walk held in October that same year. Tournament funds go to CROP Hunger Walk, the Fresno Community Food Bank and to local Junior Tennis within the Clovis School System. Nearly 50 people participated in the first tournament. Currently, there are over 100 participants.
Hunger in the Central San Joaquin Valley is quite pronounced compared to other areas of the state. It has been estimated that 2 out of 5 children in the region go hungry every day. This is why the Clovis Tennis Club is committed to hunger education and to give back to the community with the tournament.
With a silent auction running on their website, the Clovis Tennis Association is seeking a minimum bid of $1,000 for a US Open package. The auction will benefit junior tennis locally as well as hunger relief.
Harsh Winter Doesn’t Stop Outdoor Play in Michigan
The Munising CTA in Munising, Michigan has expanded tennis over the last three years with only two tennis courts in town! A rural community on the shores of Lake Superior, the Munising CTA came together ten years ago, and works to secure funding for the upkeep, maintenance, and resurfacing of the tennis courts. The town has been generous and supportive of the growing tennis community. The junior players participate in the fundraising efforts by participating in the “Serve-a-thon,” collecting 4 cents a serve for 400 serves.
Last year was a really harsh winter in Munising. The high school team was in the gym a lot with two nets set up. The team shoveled 4 feet of snow to put up nets outside. According to the team’s coach, their efforts paid off and the players drastically improved. For some players, this was their first tennis experience. But at the end of the fall, the #1 female player went undefeated for the season and won the Division 2 title for Upper Michigan. The team won its first dual competition and finished 3rd at the Division 2 finals. With only two courts, there are no home matches. The teams travel a minimum of one to three hours to play.
The city is working on getting more courts in town. The summer camp and league for kids during the day has grown over the last three years from 30 – 80 students from ages 5-18. The adult doubles recreation league in the evenings has grown to 30 players sharing the two courts on a rotation basis in the evenings throughout the summer.
