Q. You recently wrote that "Serena Williams has been criticized for having packed on some extra weight, and she appears considerably heavier." It is hard to believe that she would want to look like that. Is she pumping weights or pumping up on something else? Do the tennis players take drug tests like other athletes?
A. Tennis players are subject to more performance-enhancing drug tests than any other sport. These random tests can occur at any time and place. They almost always occur during the four majors. I have heard that some top players were tested as often as twelve times during a calendar year.
My message point, by the way, was that Serena surely showed ‘em. Frankly, I do not think that she has ANY self-image problems. Immediately after the Australian Open she referred to her “bootylicious” body during the press conference. She admires her own… “assets.”
