Seattle & Columbia Teams Claim 3.0 National Championships

Seattle, Wash., and Columbia, Md., captured the women’s and men’s national titles at the USTA League presented by Chrysler 3.0 Adult National Championships held at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.

The Seattle, Wash., women’s team, representing the USTA Pacific Northwest Section, defeated a team from Redding, Calif., 4-1, in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Seattle team defeated a team from Buffalo, N.Y., 4-1, in the semifinals.

The team is coached by Roger Mark and captained by Diana Vecchio and features Maiko Winkler Chin, Jessica Young, Terri Murray, Danna Baer, Yao Chen, Bernadette Cuyugan, Stacia Wyman, Suzanne Johnson, Betsy Alexander, Skye Schroeder, and Kathy McCann.

In the third place match, Buffalo, N.Y. defeated Winchester, Mass., 3-2.

The top four teams in order of finish are: National Champion Pacific Northwest (Seattle, Wash.), Northern California (Redding, Calif.), Eastern (Buffalo, N.Y.) and New England (Winchester, Mass.).

The Columbia, Md. men’s team representing the USTA Mid-Atlantic Section, defeated a team from Indianapolis, Ind., 5-0, in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Columbia team defeated a team from Lancaster, Penn., 4-1, in the semifinals.

The team is co-captained by James Dorf and Jon Smith and features Tom Dreisch, Abraham Amoyal, Renaldo Savady, Thuy Than, Robert Stahler, Andrew Cuthill, Glenn Zenker, Tom Baldino, Damon Humphreys, Daniel Martin, Richard Briggs, David Arbanel, and Scott Felton.

In the third place match, Lancaster, Penn. defeated Baton Rouge, La., 3-2.

The top four teams in order of finish are: National Champion Mid-Atlantic (Columbia, Md.), Midwest (Indianapolis, Ind.), Middle States (Lancaster, Penn.) and Southern (Baton Rouge, La.).

Each semifinalist advanced to the championship round by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

This year’s USTA League presented by Chrysler 3.0 Adult National Championship has drawn the top 34 teams (17 men’s and 17 women’s) from throughout the nation.

The USTA League program celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2005. Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 665,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.

Chrysler is entering its third year as the presenting sponsor and official vehicle of USTA League. Head Penn Racquet Sports is in its 21st year as official ball of USTA League.
