Island feel in the desert as Puerto Rican teams sweep titles.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Wrapping up the 2009 3.5 USTA League National Championships in Tucson, Ariz., both the Caribbean men and woman took home the championships over Texas and Pacific Northwest, respectively.
On the men’s side, the Caribbean men, from San Juan, Puerto Rico swept the Texas team to earn the title. In the third place match, Florida topped Northern California, 3-2, for the consolation title.
“Our team is like a very tight-knit family,” said Emmanuel Rodriguez of the Caribbean team. “I am so proud of all of our guys.”
The women’s semifinals saw Intermountain, Pacific Northwest, New England and Caribbean match up in the “Final Four”. Both semifinal matches would result in a 3-2 finish as Caribbean and Pacific Northwest advanced to the finals. After the Puerto Rican woman clinched over Pacific Northwest, a spirited celebration ensued with their male counterparts.
“It’s such a cool experience not only to take the title, but to have our men win as well, Mariblanca Rodriguez. “We always love to be the loudest team on the court!”
Taking third place was the Intermountain woman from Orem, Utah with their 3-2 victory over New England.
Today’s events wrapped up another wonderfully played USTA League National Championship. USTA League was established to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels.
