Midwest Women and Southern California Men Crowned Champions

Tucson, Ariz. - Under the desert sun of Tucson, two teams were able to make it to the promised land and bring home titles at the USTA League 4.5 Senior National Championships.

In today’s finals, a hard-fought and well-played civil war was decided on the court as the men’s team from the Southern California section defeated their neighbors to the north, the Northern California section, 2-1 to win the national title.

The match came down to a third set tiebreaker at third doubles as the Southern California duo from Nellie Gail Tennis Club in Laguna Hills, Calif., pulled out a 12-10 win over their opponents from the Seascape Sports Club in Aptos.

In the men’s third place match, the Southern section squad defeated the Texas section team, 2-1. Earlier in the championships, the men’s semifinals saw Southern California defeat Southern, 2-1 and Northern California edged Texas by the same score.

The women’s final saw the Midwest section team bring home a national title with a 2-1 victory over the Florida section. With straight set wins in first and third doubles, the team from Arlington Heights, Ill., quickly clinched the national title over the squad from Altamont Springs, Fla.

In the women’s third place match, Southern California defeated the “home team” Southwest section from Tucson, 3-0. The women’s semifinals saw Midwest defeat Southwest, 2-1 and Florida edged Southern California by the same score.

And as the sun sets in the scenic Arizona desert, a big high five to the men’s team from Southern California and women’s team from Midwest on winning the national championships.
