Teams named for 2009 Seniors World Team Championships

March 26, 2009 10:43 AM

The USTA announced the players who will represent the United States at the 29th ITF Seniors World Team Championships hosted by the Real Federacion Espanola de Tenis (RFET), as part of its centenary celebrations. The top American tennis players in age groups from 35 to 55 will compete against 194 teams from 38 countries around the globe, April 27-May 2, on the island of Mallorca, Spain.

The United States will be defending championships in two of the 10 divisions at the Men’s and Women’s Seniors Championships. The American teams finished in the top three in six of the 10 divisions last year.

The ITF Seniors/Super-Seniors World Team Championships is the most coveted team event on the ITF Seniors circuit. Since its inception in 1981, the number of competitors attracted to this event has increased year by year. In 1993, the ITF took the decision to divide the Seniors World Championships into two groups -- Seniors (35-55) and Super-Seniors (60-80 for men and 60-75 for women).

This is only the third occasion that Seniors World Championships have been staged in Spain, following the 1993 Seniors and Super-Seniors and the 1999 Super-Seniors Championships, both held in Barcelona.

Following the ITF Seniors World Team Championships, the World Individual Championships will take place May 3-10.
