Campus Showdowns: What are they?
- One day, short format tournaments open to juniors, college players, professionals and adults.
- The tournaments are run on college campuses, with the college coach acting as tournament director. Both ITA Membership and USTA Organizational Membership are required
- Draws are usually compass draws for both singles and doubles with matches being one set with a tiebreaker at 5-5, although format and scoring is at the discretion of the director.
- Events can be men’s, women’s or coed.
- Entry fees are kept low to provide access to full range of players. Generally, entry fees run $10 for singles, $5 for doubles and $15 for both.
- No officials needed.
- These tournaments are non-sanctioned, non-ranking events.
The Role of the USTA Player Development:
- Provide staff support to handle questions and paperwork.
- Coordinate dates with USTA Sectional Staff liaison.
- Promote events on the USTA.com College Tennis page.
- Connect College Coaches to Sectional Staff to promote events on USTA Sectional websites.
- Provide a stipend of $75 after completion of event--maximum one stipend per team per school year.
The Role of the College Coach:
- Serve as tournament director taking entries and making the draw.
- Promote the event to the local tennis community and section.
- Ensure the events are run according to NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA rules.
- Provide the facility and the balls.
- Forward draws to USTA National office upon completion.

- COMPETITION: Giving junior and college players opportunities for more competition--on their college campuses AND within NCAA rules.
- EXPOSURE: Getting more American junior players on college campuses—giving them a taste of college life and a chance to compete against college players.
- COMMUNITY OUTREACH & ADVOCACY: Helping build stronger ties between college programs and the local tennis community.
