USTA.com: When did you discover that you had the talent to win as a team?
From tryouts. When we saw the level of play in the teammates we would eventually recruit, we knew it was something special.
USTA.com: How does your team unwind after a day of matches?
We go out to local restaurants and hold regular team dinners.
USTA.com: Tell us a bit about how your school is unique?
Oregon has a unique school spirit that you can’t find at any other school. The Oregon attitude is welcoming and friendly. We are all proud to be Ducks and are always willing to represent our school, no matter where we are.
USTA.com: How does your team fundraise? Do you serve your local community in a meaningful way?
We set up fundraisers with local restaurants in which we enlist players, friends and family to go eat there, and we receive a portion of the proceeds. We also help clean up campus sports facilities after sporting events, such as basketball, baseball and lacrosse games.
USTA.com: If you were to list three specific things that need to happen in order to win a National Championship, they would be:
- We need to be aggressive at the net.
- Benefit from our dual matches with the varsity team at Oregon.
- Be in great physical condition as a team.
USTA.com: How do you exhibit school spirit?
It's really in everything we do -- we attend school football games together and take part in team "Go Ducks!" chants at matches. On the court or in the stands, we're always engaged.
USTA.com: Share with us a funny story about your team or team member(s).
We've had our share of team romances -- at least one couple has come out of the club tennis team every year. We clearly take "team bonding" very seriously.
USTA.com Share with us an uplifting story about your team or team member(s).
It's a big year for the club, as we are able to send two teams to national tournaments this spring -- obviously for Tennis on Campus Nationals in Surprise, Ariz., and also the TOC Spring Invitational in Tucson the same week. It's a first in Oregon history!
