USTA League Restructuring for 2013 National Championships

8_5_RESTRUCTURE_457x200

USTA League is changing its structure and format for the 2013 National Championships, which affects many League seasons in 2012. Gone are the monikers "Senior" (50 & over) and "Super Senior" (60 & over), replaced instead by a more representative grouping based on age.

Under the new structure, the USTA League National Championships will fall under just two divisions—Adult and Mixed. The Adult Division will be broken down into 18 & over, 40 & over, and 55 & over with a potential 65 or 70 & over league type considered for the future. Sections are encouraged to add a 65 or 70 & over league type locally. The Mixed Division will be 18 & over, which is the same as the previous format, with the potential to add a 40 & over league type in the future. As they had previously, players will continue to compete by NTRP rating within each division.

Will I need to run more championship events?

No. The new age group structure simply replaces the previous one. That is, Adult League becomes Adult 18 & over; Senior is effectively replaced by Adult 40 & over; Super Senior is replaced by Adult 55 & over; and Mixed remains Mixed 18 & over.

Will I need to secure more courts for my championship events?

Yes, but only in the Adult 40 & over category, as the new format includes two singles and three doubles matches (as opposed to the previous Senior format of three doubles matches).

Will the administrative procedures, responsibilities and organization of the Section League Coordinator need to change?

By and large, no. However, the procedures are dependent on how the section determines the administration of the program.

Can these formats be modified at the local level to address unique circumstances?

Yes. Formats at the local level are decided by the local league management in consultation with the Section. However, the structure would need to conform to the new national structure for participation in all levels of championships.

Will the League season and the schedule of the USTA League Championships impacted?

Possibly. Local leagues and championships may move to enhance the player experience.

Is this more work for me?

Your objective is to promote League play and that will remain the same. However, in 2012 and the inaugural year, there is no doubt that player education will be key to a seamless transition.

Why did the USTA make this change?

In short, to ensure that USTA League continues to meet the needs of its constituents.

What are the benefits of the new system for Local League Coordinators?

The revised system should provide a more intuitive, sensible approach to USTA League and thus increase your overall player pool. That allows for a greater impact in your local community as well as for the sport nationwide.

Moreover, the new structure will create more frequency of play opportunities for your/our members at more appropriate age divisions.
