Surprise, Ariz. -
The eleven ladies from the 7.0 Super Senior Women’s Team from Southern California have competed at the sectional level but have never qualified for the USTA League presented by Chrysler 7.0 Super Senior National Championships until this year after trying for many years.
For those of them who are here for the first time - this has been a dream come true and has been on their "bucket list" for years.
The team comes from the Coachella Valley which is a resort area - Palm Springs and Palm Desert.
“We all met on a tennis court a few years back and became friends,” replied team captain E.J. Cook. “We come from all different parts of the country: Kansas, Colorado, Canada, Michigan, Oregon, Washington, San Francisco and local desert cities.”
To say the team make-up is a smorgasbord would be an understatement.
“Our backgrounds are also very diversified - we have an accountant, interior decorator, legal secretary, book author, flower shop owner, parks & rec. worker, homemakers and a nurse,” laughed Cook. “And now here we are in Surprise having the time of our lives at nationals.”
Members of the team include: E.J. Cook (Capt), Mary Ware (Co-capt), Barb Bulifant, Barb Johns, Bonnie Byhre, Diane Koopman, Diane Lighthall, Lorraine Usher, Mary McPartland, Vicki Lord, and Kathie Latting.
Some people's bucket list consists of climbing Mt. Everest, going on a safari in Africa, or taking a trip around the world - but this team’s team's bucket list was coming to Surprise and competing at the national championships.
