The 2010 SW Desert Wheelchair Classic featured players from all over the country as well as the local favorites from the U of A tennis team. The tournament began with perfect weather and the players were geared up for a great weekend of tennis.
Probably the highlight match, and one of the few events completed, was the JR Open final between Hayden Snell and Ryan Nelson. After almost 3 hours of high quality play and competition, Ryan Nelson took the title 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. The spectators and players alike were thrilled and there was a strong feeling of optimism for the future of wheelchair tennis.
As always, the fans came out to support their local hero Bryan Barten who was competing in the doubles between handling all of the transportation for the players. The El Paso crowd, coached by Linda Cobbs was very successful as well and most of the players were actually awaiting their chance to take home the trophy in a few finals. Fred Amaya, Sandra Ramirez, Reggie Espinoza , and Nettie St Cyr, the tournament’s sweetheart, were disappointed when rain canceled all tournament play on Sunday, but the great memories and spirited competition assured they will return in 2011.
The USTA/ITF SW Desert Classic Tournament Committee is already looking forward to next year!
