RIO DE JANEIRO – Wheelchair tennis player Kaitlyn Verfuerth (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) has been elected as the U.S. flag bearer for the closing ceremony Sunday at the 2007 Parapan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Verfuerth won two gold medals in Rio, pairing with Beth Arnoult-Ritthaler (Paia, Hawaii) to win the women’s doubles competition and defeating Arnoult-Ritthaler to win the women’s singles tournament.
Closing ceremonies will end a very eventful week for Verfuerth, who turned 22 on the day of opening ceremonies, Aug. 12, and earned two of the biggest gold medals of her young career on Thursday and Friday.
“I’m really excited to be elected as flag bearer,” Verfuerth said. “It’s such an honor. I’m looking forward to being the U.S. representative at closing ceremony. I had a feeling I could do well in my matches, but to receive this opportunity is amazing.”
Closing ceremonies will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the International Zone of the Athletes Village.
