The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced that Curt Young of Honolulu, Hawaii has won a nationwide online vote and has been chosen as the winner of its "Create Your Own Tennis Court" Photo Contest. For receiving the most votes, Young will receive a trip for four to New York City to attend the 2013 US Open Tennis Championships.

 

Young’s winning photo entry was set up in Kapiolani Park in Waikiki, Hawaii, using items from the island including coconuts, palm fronds and flowers, capturing the beauty of the island.

 

"In Hawaii, we have lots of beautiful locales for ‘home-made’ tennis courts," said Young. "We used coconuts to mark the boundaries, palm fronds and netting to form the Hawaiian-style net, warm sunshine to maximize our athletic prowess, and fragrant flowers to soothe our souls when we get crushed by our opponents."

 

The 2012 "Create Your Own Tennis Court" Photo Contest allowed the public to vote for the court they felt was the most unique. The USTA was looking for the most creative court utilizing the USTA’s 10 and Under Tennis Initiative. One of the many benefits of 10 and Under Tennis is that it has made tennis a sport that can be played anywhere.

 

Photos of creative tennis courts from all over the country were submitted by entrants for consideration on www.createyourowntenniscourt.com between May 7 and July 8, 2012. After carefully reviewing each submission, a panel of judges selected ten photos as finalists. The ten finalists photos can be viewed on www.createyourowntenniscourt.com. Public voting for the ten finalists took place from July 27 - September 12.
