Doubles top seeds Glatch, Oudin ousted in Charlottesville

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The top-seeded doubles team of Americans Alexa Glatch and Melanie Oudin were ousted by Coco Vandeweghe and Irina Falconi in first-round play Thursday at the Boyd Tinsley Women’s Clay Court Classic, the USTA Pro Circuit event at The Boar’s Head.

Singles play was canceled for the day due to weather. Singles second-round and quarterfinal-round matches will both be played on Friday.

Vandeweghe and Falconi moved on to quarterfinal play after splitting the first two sets against Glatch and Oudin, 6-3, 4-6, before taking the tiebreak, 10-2. The pair had topped Isabella Holland of Australia and Akiko Omae of Japan earlier in the day by a score of 6-7 (5), 6-2 (10-2).

In other doubles play, Maria Sanchez and Yasmin Shnack of the United States defeated Carly Gullickson and Ashley Weinhold, 7-6, 6-2. Julia Cohen and Chi Chi Scholl of the United States were 6-1, 6-2 winners over Whitney Jones of the United States and Roxanne Vaisemberg of Brazil, before losing to Russia’s Elena Bovina and Israel’s Julia Glushko, 6-3, 6-2.

The third-seeded team of Sharon Fichman and Valeria Solovieva moved on to the semifinals, when Julia Boserup and Shelby Rogers defaulted due to injury.

Play continues Friday at 10 a.m. ET at The Boar’s Head with second round and quarterfinal play.

The 11th Annual Boyd Tinsley Women’s Clay Court Classic features 32 singles players and a 16-team doubles field. The tournament is held at Boar’s Head Sports Club, 200 Wellington Drive in Charlottesville, Va. Admission to the tournament is free, and the event is open to the public.

With more than 90 tournaments throughout the country and prize money ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, the USTA Pro Circuit is the pathway to the US Open and tour-level competition for aspiring tennis players and a frequent battleground for established professionals. Last year, more than 1,000 men and women from more than 70 countries competed on the USTA Pro Circuit for approximately $3.2 million in prize money and valuable ATP World Tour and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour ranking points.
