Kwiatkowski carries American boys on Day 2 of Orange Bowl

No. 8 seed William Blumberg advanced to the third round of the boys' 16s draw.

PLANTATION, Fla.
– If Thai-Son Kwiatkowski is feeling any pressure, the 17-year old from Charlotte, N.C., didn’t show it Tuesday at the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships.

Kwiatkowski dispatched Germany’s Viktor Kostin, 7-6 (2), 6-3, on the Frank Veltri Tennis Center’s clay courts, becoming one of three American boys, along with Ronnie Schneider (Bloomington, Ind.) and Daniel Kerznerman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to advance to the second round of the 18s main draw on Tuesday.

As the tournament’s No. 9 seed, Kwiatkowski, following first-round losses by No. 5 Spencer Papa and No. 7 Mackenzie McDonald on Monday, is the highest remaining seeded American in the draw and, seemingly, has the best chance to become to the first American to win the Orange Bowl boys' 18s title since Timothy Neilly in 2004.

"I think it was a good first match. I was able to do the things that I wanted to work on and things that I wanted to do if I want to go deep into the tournament," said Kwiatkowski, who previously spent three years training at the USTA Player Development National Training Center in Boca Raton, Fla. "So, I feel like today’s a good day to start it off well. I hit the forehand pretty well. I hit the serve pretty well. I just need to clean a couple things up, and I think I have a pretty good chance."

Chances are some of the top seeds in the boys' 18s draw feel the same way. Italy’s Gianluigi Quinzi, the No. 1 seed who is ranked No. 3 in the world, second-seeded Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal and No. 6 Christian Garin of Chile all won their first-round matches in straight sets, Garin just days removed from winning the Eddie Herr International Junior Championship boys' 18s title in Bradenton, Fla., on Sunday.

The Eddie Herr girls' 18s champion, 14-year old Ana Konjuh of Croatia, also earned a first-round victory in the Orange Bowl 18s draw on Monday, beating fellow 14-year-old Alicia Black (Boca Raton, Fla.), 6-1, 6-3.

"You know, right now I have a lot of self-confidence," Konjuh said. "I played really well. I really respect her. She’s a good player, but today I was just better."

In the girls' 16s draw, unseeded Jessica Golovin (New York, N.Y.), who trains at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy in New York, toppled the No. 1 seed, Johnnise Renaud (North Miami, Fla.), 7-6 (0), 1-6, 6-3, in the second round, using a deep arsenal of shots and tactics.

"It’s always great to have a variety in girls tennis because most girls just hit with a lot of power," Golovin said. "So it’s great to mix it up."

Each of the top four seeds in the boys' 16s draw advanced to the third round, including No. 3 Henrik Weirsholm (Kirkland, Wash.), who trains at the USTA Player Development National Training Center in Boca Raton. No. 8 seed William Blumberg (Greenwich, Conn.), who trains at the USTA Player Development National Training Center East at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., also reached the third round, beating Josh Silverstein (Great Neck, N.Y).
