Top juniors to compete against Britain in annual events

June 18, 2013 02:27 PM
Stefan Kozlov is the youngest boy in the world's Top 25 at No. 21.
Seventeen-year-old Taylor Townsend of Chicago and 15-year-old Stefan Kozlov of Pembroke Pines, Fla., are among the top juniors who will represent the United States in the Maureen Connolly Challenge Trophy (girls) and Lawn Tennis Association Junior Challenge Trophy (boys), two annual competitions between the best 18-and-under female and male tennis players from the United States and Great Britain.

The events will take place June 20 and June 21 in Eastbourne, England.

In addition to Townsend, Louisa Chirico, 17, from Harrison, N.Y.; Jamie Loeb, 18, from Ossining, N.Y.; and Alicia Black, 15, from Boca Raton, Fla., will compete for the U.S. girls. Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, 18, from Charlotte, N.C.; Noah Rubin, 17, from Rockville Centre, N.Y.; Luca Corinteli, 17, from Alexandria, Va.; and Spencer Papa, 17, from Edmond, Okla., will play for the boys.

The events are being held alongside the AEGON International, a dual ATP World Tour/WTA tournament. Each team will play a total of 12 matches – eight singles and four doubles – over the two-day event. The United States leads the Maureen Connolly Challenge Trophy, 24-12, while Great Britain won the inaugural LTA Junior Tennis Challenge last summer.

USTA National Coaches Freddy Rodriguez and Nicolas Todero will captain the girls’ and boys’ teams, respectively.

All nine players representing the U.S. will compete in the Wimbledon Junior Championships, either in the main draw or in qualifying, from June 29 to July 7 at the All England Club in London.

Currently, Townsend, Kozlov and Papa train at the USTA Training Center – Headquarters in Boca Raton. Chirico trains at the National Training Center – East in Flushing, N.Y., and Corinteli trains at the Junior tennis Champions Center in College Park, Md., a USTA Certified Regional Training Center.

Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys and Grace Min are among the players who have previously represented the U.S. in the Maureen Connolly Challenge Trophy.
