World Top 100 junior Sameer Kumar, recent Junior Davis Cup champion Gianni Ross and Claire Liu (pictured above), the No. 1 girls’ recruit in the Class of 2018, are among the 50 juniors participating in the inaugural USTA National Masters Championship, an all-inclusive clay-court tournament and training camp that will be held at the USTA Training Center – Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., from Oct. 23-26.

The event was developed from the past model of junior national team training camps, in which the top juniors from around the country came together for match play and training. It will feature a “progressive” tournament format combining 18-and-under, 16-and-under and 14-and-under age groups for boys and girls. The 14-and-unders will square off first, with the winner advancing to play in the 16s group. Then the two top players from the 16s will progress to play with the 18s.

In addition to the clay-court tournament, each junior will have access to the Training Center’s resources, receiving on-court instruction from the USTA national coaching staff, as well as strength and conditioning and mental skills training.

Headlining this year’s participants are 17-year-old Kumar, from Carmel, Ind., a Stanford recruit and the No. 71-ranked junior in the world; 15-year-old Ross, from La Grange, Ill., who helped the U.S. win the 16-and-under Junior Davis Cup title in September in San Luis Potosi, Mexico; and 14-year-old Liu, from Thousand Oaks, Calif., the No. 1-ranked freshman in the country by TennisRecruiting.net.
