USTA Player Development announced today that Sylvain Guichard has been hired as a USTA National Coach for Women’s Tennis. In this role, Guichard will facilitate coaching and training programs while working with players in the USTA Player Development program. He will be based at the USTA Training Center-Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., and will report to Ola Malmqvist, Head of Women’s Tennis, USTA Player Development. Guichard joins the coaching staff on February 14.

"Sylvain brings a wealth of experience to the USTA National Coaching staff," said Patrick McEnroe, General Manager, USTA Player Development. "He has proven success in the private sector and in the college ranks and knows what it will take for our athletes to achieve at every level of the sport."

Guichard, 44, a native of France who currently resides in Buffalo Grove, Ill., joins the USTA following a three-year stint as Manager and Director of Coaching at The Racquet Club of Lake Bluff in Lake Bluff, Ill., where he helped Michael Redlicki capture the boys’ 16s singles titles at both the USTA National Clay Court Championships and USTA National Hard Court Championships in 2010. Previously, Guichard spent 15 years in the men’s tennis program at Mississippi State University – first as a player, then as an assistant coach, and finally as head coach from 2001-07. His teams participated in 14 NCAA Championships during that span, and Guichard was named SEC Coach of the Year and Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2005.

The USTA Player Development unit has been created to identify and develop the next generation of American champions by surrounding the top junior players and young pros with the resources, facilities and coaching they need to reach their maximum potential. The Player Development program is based at the USTA Training Center-Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla., and also utilizes the USTA Training Center-West in Carson, Calif., and the USTA Training Center-East in Flushing, N.Y. In 2008, the USTA began implementing its Certified Regional Training Center program as part of its expanded efforts to develop future American tennis champions, which will expand the USTA Player Development program’s reach throughout the country by partnering with academies, clubs and tennis centers that have a proven record of identifying and developing tennis players.
