Intermountain, Southern Capture Championships at 2010 USTA League 2.5 Nationals

The Salt Lake City men from the USTA Intermountain section and the Southern section women from Rogers, AR, were crowned national league champions this weekend at the 2010 USTA League 2.5 National Championships, held Oct. 2 - Oct. 4 at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA.

The Utah men defeated the USTA Southern section squad from Mandeville, LA, 2-1 in the final.

Team captain Christian Oliphant says the winning strategy for the Utah men was simple: "keep the ball in."  The team also nominates Coach John Lin for "coach of the year."  Team members say he made all the difference.

The Salt Lake City team, playing out of the Salt Lake Swim & Tennis Club, was comprised of Captain Christian Oliphant, his brother Ryan Oliphant, Brad Carter, Jorge Ortega, Brady Tanner, Jordan Pitts, and Kent Crockett.

*In the consolation match, the USTA Caribbean section men out of Ponce, Puerto Rico, defeated the USTA Eastern section, 2-1.

In the women's final, the USTA Southern section team defeated the USTA Northern California section women from Oakland, CA, 2-1.  Coach Luke White says it was a matter of teamwork, practice, and the fact the women were "mentally tough."  The Southern women included Alysia Treece, Carolyn Gilmore, Paula Kaufmann, Beth Clark, Kiki Hoener.

The USTA Caribbean section women from Caguas, Puerto Rico, topped the USTA Eastern section women from Long Island, NY, 2-1 to clinch 3rd place.
