Victoria Duval, 16, won the singles title at the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships in San Diego by upending five of the tournament’s top 10 seeds in the draw, including No. 3 seed Alexandra Kiick, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0, in the final. With the victory, Duval earned a wild card into the US Open women's main draw, where she fell to three-time champion Kim Clijsters, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round. Duval went on to compete in the girls' event the following week and had big success, advancing to the semifinals before falling to Anett Kontaveit.
