RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - The USTA Southern California Section men’s team and the USTA Texas Section women’s team captured national titles at the 2011 USTA 4.5 Senior National Championships, held Oct. 13-15, at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.
The Southern California men’s team from Laguna Hills, CA defeated a squad from Missouri Valley 2-1 in the finals. A team from New England defeated a team representing Florida for third-place honors.
The Southern California is captained by Gary W. Doi and features Cory S. Fiene, Jeffrey G. Johnston, Douglas A. Matthews, Dan Oriza, Alan M. Godfrey, Timothy F. Downey, Thomas C. Bozarth and Tom Olmstead.
On the women’s side, the Texas team from Dallas defeated a group representing the Florida section from Deland, 2-1, in the finals.
The Texas women’s team is captained by Kay Tully and features Katie Wylie, Carol Young, Lynn Magnus, Susan G. Baten, Sharon Chapple, Dione Lineberry, Kathy Schoonover, Deb Nicholson, Paula McLeod, Lillian G. Cobb, Teal Lang, Lee Villabo.
Among the men, third place went to the New England Section, which defeated a team from Florida in the consolation match.
In women’s play, the Northern California Section picked up third place with a victory over the Pacific Northwest Section.
This year’s USTA League 4.5 Senior National Championship has drawn the top 34 teams (17 men’s and 16 women’s) from throughout the nation.
